CPS COVID-19 Dashboard

The Project

I started this project due to an interest in the Chicago Public Schools COVID-19 numbers and how the imminent reopening of schools to in-person learning may or may not change them. I hope that it can serve as a tool for those in Chicago (and elsewhere) interested in how COVID-19 might spread following the reopening of a large and diverse school district. There are a number of features that I plan on adding after this initial release, but as with most projects, my interest will depend largely on the interest in the community in using it.

AstraZeneca Vaccine Trial Manifest

The Project

The clinical research laboratory I currently work in is serving as an intermediary in the AstraZeneca/Oxford COVID-19 vaccine trial. To solve a logistical and personnel pinch point, I developed an internal application in VBA to facilitate organizing shipments of potentially hundreds of samples per week. This tool has resulted in a reduction of shipment preparation and quality control time from 2 people taking 1-2 hours down to 1 person taking 15 -20 minutes. I reproduced the application in HTML and JavaScript to share with others.

The Project

During this past Summer , I was lucky enough to spend the better part of a week at a nice house on a small lake with some family (parents + 3 siblings and their families) and our kids (5 kids between 11 and 6) were obsessed with playing local co-op Minecraft with each other. Not wanting the minecraft magic to end when the week did, I set about simple ways to keeping their games going. Microsoft sells realms access for about $8 a month, but I wanted to see if there was a simple way to quickly spin up a cloud server for less.

The Cloud Resume Challenge was devised by Forrest Brazeal as a project for those new to the cloud and development. As a Infectious Disease Laboratory Technician trying to pivot into a new career in cloud and software development, it was a perfect project.

Developed and deployed an application for recording, tracking, and reporting internal patients, tests, and results saving thousands of hours and greatly reducing errors.

Developed and maintained a database for a multi-site national clinical trial with >2000 study participants.

JULY 2015 - PRESENT

CLINICAL RESEARCH TECHNOLOGIST,

Supporting clinical testing and research in government and industry sponsored clinical trials in HIV/AIDS, Influenza, and COVID19 by developing and performing high complexity testing in a CAP certified laboratory.

Developed and validated a protocol for detection of HIV in newborns which was approved for clinical and Aids Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) usage for 1/50th the cost and ½ the time of commercially available tests.
Led hospital effort to rapidly validate and efficiently scale high throughput COVID-19 testing decreasing turnaround time from 6+ days to less than 1 day.
Performed in lead and support roles in industry sponsored IVD development trials by global pharmaceutical companies such as Alere/Abbott, and BD, helping get their products FDA approval and to market.

Conducted research on the role of central metabolism and electron transport in biofilm formation and symbiotic association by Vibrio fischeri.

Developed a protocol for targeted introduction of genes into the V. fischeri chromosome.
Streamlined conjugation protocols to allow isolation of desired strains from 5 to 2 days.
Mutagenized and screened 47,000+ mutant strains for desired phenotype.
Utilized molecular, genetic, and bioinformatic methods to identify mutation location of 200+ mutant strains.
Regularly presented research findings at department meetings and scholarly conferences to multidisciplinary audiences.
Mentored junior graduate, undergraduate, and high school students during the development and implementation of their research projects.

About

I solve problems with the tools available. I am a DevOps engineer with a bias for action that will get the job done. That isn’t hollow resume fluff. I served as a Sergeant in the Army deploying to Baghdad as a combat medic where action saved lives. After a master’s degree in Microbiology and Immunology, I worked in an infectious disease lab where, in the very early days of the COVID-19 pandemic, my effort and resolve lead my hospital to have one of the first non-health department COVID-19 tests validated in the state. Following a career transition into cloud architecture and engineering, I continue to level up and push myself so that I will be equipped and ready to take action. When I take a job, I get it done.
